Reflections on 2025

At the end of every year we like to look back and reflect on how the past 12 months have unfolded, and 2025 has been quite the adventure for Project:Camp.

This time last year we were working on a strategic planning process, and reimagining our vision and mission for the organization. We were planning on revamping our preparedness program, rededicating ourselves to our response and pop-up camps, and figuring out how to create a sustainable model that ensured every child impacted by disaster receives the care and compassion they deserve.

Little did we know that a few short weeks later we would be thrown into the biggest disaster Project:Camp has responded to.

The Los Angeles wildfires that broke out in January really set the tone for our 2025. Not only was it the largest response to date for the organization, it was a watershed moment in terms of exposure and connection. After a month of running 10 different camps in LA for kids who had lost homes or been displaced by the fires, we spent several months working with both new and old partners to build out infrastructure for future disasters. We rolled out our new preparedness model focused on our Rapid Response Camp Network, revamped our trauma-informed practice, and hired two new full-time employees to help build out these programs.

During the summer we had our first response that took us back to a location we’d already run camp in a previous year, which gave us perspective on how to offer both support in the short and longer term. Our Ruidoso, New Mexico deployment showed us how we could build off of previous relationships, work with local stakeholders on a deeper level, and build lasting relationships with kids and communities.

Through it all, we have felt the love and support of our community – the people who have been a part of our work and helped make the world a better place for kids and families. We can’t do this work without you, and we want you to know how thankful we are to have you in our corner.
